1. Dark corners and poor lighting
Shadows are cover. Unlit yards, loading bays and back entrances invite an approach no one will see. Good lighting is one of the cheapest, most effective deterrents available.
2. Blind spots your cameras miss
Walk the boundary. Anywhere a person could climb, hide or work on a lock unseen is a blind spot — whether your cameras simply do not cover it, or there are no cameras at all.
3. Untested alarms and old batteries
An alarm that has not been tested in a year is a gamble. The same goes for electric fences and gate batteries that quietly died during load-shedding.
4. Tailgating at gates and doors
If anyone can slip in behind a staff member or a delivery, access control is only theatre. Visitor management and an on-site presence close that gap.
5. Predictable routines
Fixed opening, cash-up and lock-up times tell a watcher exactly when to act. Vary routines and never handle cash at the same place and time each day.
