The festive season is peak holiday time — and peak burglary time. An empty, predictable home is exactly what opportunists look for. Run through this checklist before you go.
Before you leave
- Make the home look lived-in: timers on a few lights, and ask a neighbour to collect post and parcels.
- Do not announce your plans on social media — post your photos when you are back.
- Test your alarm, electric fence and gate, and replace any tired backup batteries.
- Lock everything — including upstairs windows and the garage internal door.
- Store valuables and spare keys out of sight, never in obvious places.
While you are away
- Give a trusted neighbour or family member your contact details and your security provider's number.
- Arrange extra patrols or a house-watch service for longer trips.
- Keep at least one set of curtains in their normal position — fully closed for days signals an empty house.
